Sports

Sport forms an important part of the life at Ryan Catholic College. Students are encouraged to be involved in a diverse range of sporting activities.

Ryan Catholic College has built a proud sporting reputation. Students are encouraged to compete for regional, state and national representation in a variety of sports. We have many sporting competitions offered to students through the TPSS (Townsville Primary School Sport) and TSSSA (Townsville Secondary School Sport Association), each term of the year.

Interschool (TPSS) and Block Sport (TSSSA)

Students form teams in sports offered for their age group, within that term. Each team competes against other schools in Townsville over a 5-6 week period, one afternoon a week. Sports can be played at a central venue eg. AFL grounds, Murray, or home/away grounds.

NQ Trials

Students may attend, or be selected from Cluster Trials to attend, the North Queensland representative team selection trials. In attending these trials, students are expected to understand the costs and commitment involved if selected in the representative team. Those sports with fewer numbers of interest will go straight through to NQ trials.

Rowing
Rowing at Ryan is a Team sport comprising of girls and boys from years 8 to 12.

Seven schools in the Townsville district compete at several regattas during Terms 2 & 3. The Townsville All Schools Rowing Association (TASRA) governs school rowing in the area.

As a sport, rowing provides one of the most comprehensive aerobic fitness workouts and is great for strength development. Rowers develop skills as a team in crewed boats and as individuals in single sculls. Rowing at Ryan is an inclusive sport, catering for all levels of ability.

The Riverway Rowing Club (RRC) is our host club and the rowers train at their facility on Riverway Drive. Townsville Grammar School also trains at Riverway. The five other Townsville school rowing teams are hosted by the Townsville (Tvl) JCU Rowing Club on Riverside Boulevard. All the Townsville school regattas are held at these two facilities.

The Riverway and Tvl JCU Rowing Clubs, are Masters Clubs and they compete at Regattas through out North Queensland. The Ryan Rowing Team has competed with Riverway at various regional regattas (Mackay, Tablelands Regattas). This is a great opportunity for the school rowers to row with very experienced rowers and to develop their skills.

We would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, the Wulgurukaba people. We also acknowledge their neighbouring brothers and sisters on the land, the Bindal people. We pay our respects to elders past present and emerging. May we walk gently and peacefully on this land together.
