Every Name Matters
We're calling on past students, families, staff and the wider Townsville community to help uncover a piece of the College’s history as it works to complete its Honour Boards.
The College is seeking information about former student leaders whose names may be missing from its Honour Boards, including School Captains and House Captains from across the College’s history from 1979.
The community is also encouraged to share photographs, yearbooks, records and memories that could help the College ensure the stories and achievements of past students are accurately captured for future generations.
Our Principal Candi said, "Help us share our story. Every captain, every leader and every story matters. Together, we can complete our Honour Boards and honour those who have helped shape Ryan Catholic College as we prepare to celebrate 50 years in 2029."
Our College was first established by the Catholic Diocese of Townsville in 1979 to serve the rapidly developing Upper Ross area. It opened in January that year with just 74 students across Years One, Two, Three and Eight, supported by a staff of five under foundation Principal Barry Taylor.
Named after Bishop Hugh Ryan, the College was planned as a co-educational Catholic school from its inception and became Townsville’s first co-educational Catholic College offering education from Preschool to Year 12.
Our 2026 College Captains, Lily Taylor and Kane Keough, started at Ryan together in Prep, and will now become part of that history themselves. Lily said, “We’ve been at Ryan since Prep, so we’ve seen how much the College feels like a community."
“It’s exciting to know that our names will become part of the Honour Boards, but it also makes you think about all the students who came before us. I hope people in the Ryan community can help us find the names and stories that are missing so we can recognise everyone who has helped shape the College.”
With your help will could fill gaps in our historical records and ensure our Honour Boards tell a more complete story of Ryan’s journey from a small community school in 1979 to the College it is today.
We want to go back to the beginning...
We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land and waters, the Wulgurukaba, and that this country has been a place of learning and ceremony for tens of thousands of years. We also acknowledge the neighbouring language groups as brothers and sisters of the land. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging. May we walk gently and peacefully on this land together.
